Shelving Update!

Happy New Year!
We're starting off our New Year's re-organization by setting up some much-needed shelves for our many many books.
The front room is a whole new place, thanks to our friends at Ikea.

The Problem: PILES and PILES of BOOKS

The Solution: MARKOR shelves (2 units) from Ikea

Here's Jake with our box o' shelving:

And the first one is finished! It wasn't too bad.

The second one came together in a snap.

We filled both shelves (in some spots, two rows deep).

Several Small Projects

We've been busy here with Mom propelling the completion of several small projects. Jake added a new shelf into this cabinet in the kitchen, making it much more useful for all the stuff we need to fit in there. In the shot of the finished shelf, you can also see our terrific new work light, which arrived for Christmas from Ernta Claus. It's just what we needed!

Jake also fixed the front of this small kitchen drawer. It was broken when we moved in, and we haven't been able to use it. Now it's a helpful home for various bags.

Jake also installed a new shelf over the radiator. It fits nicely here, and holds cookbooks and such. Check out the bookends!

While Jake worked on the shelf, I worked on organizing some of our tools and home-fix-it equipment, which was in a sorry state of disarray. It still is, but somewhat less so. I found several baggies of various pieces of hardware, which I organized and put in my favorite old school tupperware cups (that we have never used). I then used my favorite label maker to create labels. This worked for about 3 seconds, when the labels popped off. With the added adhesive powers of the hot glue gun, they stayed on, but I'm not sure that these little containers will really be the final resting place for the screws and nails and such.

It looked simpler on paper.

The basement pantry needed some shelves. I needed some justification for owning a power saw. Here's what happened:

I made the shelves out of 2x4's and these handy little 2'x4' panels of plywood that Home Depot sells. That's me on a finished shelf above.

I decided to make the shelves twelve feet long, so the final assembly had to happen in place:

Surprisingly, this all went pretty smoothly. I only had to make one trip to the hardware store mid-project.

Basement Pantry Shelves in Process

It has been an exciting day!
We started with an always exciting trip to Home Despot, where we purchased LUMBER! You can see it on top of our car here.

Jake is a madman with that saw. These shelves are going to be HUGE! The plan is 12 feet long and 6 feet high, with three long, deep shelves spaced two feet apart. Jake finished one shelf and the leg supports today. They stand at the ready in the pantry right now. Tomorrow (we hope) will be the last two shelves and final assembly!
